Public Rally to Stop NYS Tax Dollars
Funding the Torture of Children
West Capital Lawn in Albany, NY
High Profile Speakers to Address Public Rally to Stop NYS Tax Dollars Funding the Torture of Children, Thursday, August 9, 2012 on the West Capital Lawn in Albany, NY
Albany, NY - On Thursday August 9,
2012, concerned citizens will protest the allocation of New York State
tax dollars that fund the torture of children and young adults with
disabilities at the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center (JRC) in Canton,
Massachusetts. JRC uses electric shock and sensory deprivation to modify
the behavior of its students. The United Nations' Special Rapporteur on
Torture has officially declared this torture.
The
majority of the Judge Rotenberg Center’s residents are from New York.
Their tuition (over $250,000 per year per student) is largely paid by
public funding from the state or school district.
The August 9 Rally
to Stop NYS Tax Dollars Supporting the Torture of Children builds on
the tremendous momentum created by previous actions, as well as media
attention toward the center’s barbaric approach to discipline. The August 9 rally is expected to draw large crowds and will be held on the West Capital Lawn – Swan Street Steps.
The
rally has been organized by Occupy JRC, YOUTH POWER! and Voices of the
Heart. Invited speakers include Assemblywoman Joan Millman (D
- Brooklyn) and Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) as well
as community leaders from the state of New York and beyond.
